The Farm Assistant will play an important role in the daily operations at McClure Farms – a wean-to-finish pig operation and grain farm located 40 minutes northwest of Lima. Job responsibilities span across the farm, and are not limited to the barn. Responsibilities include: receiving and housing newly-weaned pigs from other barns, maintaining a clean and safe living environment, managing animal feed levels, monitoring overall animal health, care and treatment, and maintaining accurate records.

This position will hold additional responsibilities around the farm, such as: general farm maintenance and labor, local transport of grain via farm transport semis, operating farm equipment to plant and harvest crops, among other duties. Interested applicants should have a strong work ethic, attention to detail, ability to work well with little supervision and enjoy working on their feet.

About the Role:

  • You assist with feeding, watering and movement of sows and piglets
  • You maintain specified housekeeping assignments, including power washing and disinfecting, in accordance with the provided housekeeping guidelines and expectations
  • You carry out and understand the importance of all biosecurity procedures  
  • You keep accurate record keeping for breeding and farrowing of sows within a timely and accurate manner
  • You perform vaccinations and identify/provide medical treatment to maintain the health of sows
  • You process, treat, castrate and wean piglets
  • You artificially inseminate and heat check sows
  • You perform other job duties assigned that are found to be necessary

Who You Are: 

  • GED or high school diploma preferred
  • Committed to ensure the best practices of animal care are performed on a daily basis
  • Written communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to work early mornings, and some weekends
  • Able to stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds consecutively
  • Have a passion for agriculture
  • Able to handle multiple assignments and tasks around the farm
  • Evidence of analytical reasoning and mathematical skills to add, subtract, multiply and divide
  • Manufacturing or farm experience preferred, but not required

Nursery is the general term used to describe the barn where pigs are housed when they are 6-8 weeks of age.  This position is responsible for providing daily care to ensure healthy growth and well-being of mid-sized pigs.  The Nursery Care Specialist will be responsible for performing daily duties within the nursery, such as: receiving and housing newly-weaned pigs from other barns, maintaining a clean and safe living environment, managing animal feed levels, providing routine health vaccinations, monitoring overall animal health, care and treatment, and maintaining accurate records.  The ideal candidate should have a desire to work hands-on with pigs, high attention to detail, and enjoy working with other team members.

  5. Be courteous and respectful to fellow team members, managers and growers.
  6. Responsible for leaving the barn in the same condition as it was prior to arrival.
  7. Promote the Cooper Culture through trainings and personal demonstration.
  8. Maintain an active interest in performance level, attendance, and attitude.
  9. Follow all safety practices and protocols.
  10. Perform all duties as apparent or assigned.
